The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) candidate for Osun Central Senatorial District, Ibrahim Adekunle, has hinged his 2027 electoral bid on grassroots mobilisation and candidate acceptability, declaring that he is confident of defeating his opponents in the senatorial contest.
Adekunle spoke in Osogbo on Thursday during his official unveiling as the party’s flagbearer for the Osun Central Senatorial District election scheduled for January 16, 2027.
The candidate argued that the outcome of contemporary elections could no longer be determined by political party structures alone, insisting that the popularity of individual candidates and the strength of their grassroots networks would play a decisive role.
He said, “Elections are no longer about political parties but about the support of the people and the structure put in place by the candidate. Definitely, I am going to win the Osun Central Senatorial seat. I am not bothered about any opposition. I have what it takes to win.”
Adekunle, who described the APM as a youth-driven platform, appealed to voters in Osun to support what he called vibrant, accessible and responsive candidates for elective positions.
He said his campaign would prioritise regular engagement with constituents, particularly young people, promising to remain accessible and responsive to their concerns if elected.
“My message to the people of Osun is that they should vote for vibrant people to represent them both at the federal and state levels under the platform of the APM,” he said.
“This party is for the youths, and the youths should take advantage of this opportunity to vote for someone who will be on ground at all times to listen to them and work to better their lives.”
The unveiling also provided an opportunity for the APM leadership to begin its grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections, with the party urging members to intensify their presence across communities in the senatorial district.
The National Leader of the party, Babatunde Tijani, appealed to members to commence mobilisation while urging eligible voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards ahead of the elections.
Tijani also expressed confidence in the presidential ambition of the party’s candidate, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, saying the governor would emerge as Nigeria’s next president.
“Let me assure you that come May 29, 2027, Engr. Seyi Makinde will be sworn in as the President of Nigeria,” Tijani said.
He cited Makinde’s performance in Oyo State and his youthfulness as reasons for the party’s confidence in his presidential bid.
Tijani also criticised what he described as the Federal Government’s infrastructure priorities, questioning the emphasis on the coastal road project amid the condition of existing roads.
He said the APM would seek to redirect attention to infrastructure and other areas it considers critical to the welfare of Nigerians if its candidates are elected.
Earlier, the Osun State Chairman of the APM, Adewale Adebayo, said Osun Central deserved a youthful representative who would be ready to work for the people.
Adebayo also interpreted the turnout at the unveiling as an indication of support for the candidate and the party, urging members to translate the enthusiasm into sustained grassroots mobilisation ahead of the election.
