The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has described the death of former Governor of the old Gongola State and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Mohammed Tukur, as a major loss to Nigeria’s political and public life.
Adebayo, in a condolence message, said Tukur’s decades of service spanned governance, business, administration and national politics, describing him as a prominent figure whose contributions cut across several chapters of Nigeria’s history.
He said Tukur belonged to a generation of leaders whose careers were shaped by extensive public service and experience in addressing the country’s political and economic challenges.
“Alhaji Bamanga Tukur was not merely a politician; he was an institution in Nigerian public life,” Adebayo said.
He recalled Tukur’s service at the Nigerian Ports Authority, as Governor of Gongola State, Minister of Industries and later as National Chairman of the PDP.
According to Adebayo, Tukur’s death was particularly poignant as it occurred just three days before his 91st birthday.
He said the former governor’s death was a reminder that although political offices were temporary, the impact of a life dedicated to public service could endure for generations.
Adebayo also urged Nigerians to rise above partisan differences in mourning the late elder statesman.
“Today is not a day for partisan politics. It is a day to honour a Nigerian elder who gave a significant portion of his life to public service and the development of our nation,” he said.
The SDP candidate said that despite belonging to different political traditions from Tukur, his death should be viewed beyond partisan considerations.
He commiserated with the Tukur family, the people of Adamawa State and Nigerians across the country, while praying for the repose of the deceased’s soul.
“May Almighty Allah grant Alhaji Bamanga Tukur Aljannatul Firdaus, and may He give his family, associates and the people of Adamawa the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” Adebayo said.
He added that Tukur’s years of service should continue to inspire those entrusted with the responsibility of building a better Nigeria.
