Nigeria’s Miracle Ezechukwu saw her World U-20 Championships dream end in Eugene, Oregon, after she was controversially disqualified from the women’s 200m final over a lane infringement.

Ezechukwu had produced one of the standout performances of the semifinal round, clocking a personal best of 22.61 seconds to finish second and appear set for a place in the final, only for officials to rule her out for stepping outside her lane.

Team Nigeria lodged a protest in an attempt to overturn the decision and reinstate the teenager for the final, but the appeal was rejected, leaving Ezechukwu inconsolable as she spent much of the day in tears.

The ruling has sparked disappointment among Nigerian athletics stakeholders, who believe the circumstances surrounding the decision deserve closer scrutiny, and has also revived concerns over the standard of officiating and technical expertise available to Nigerian athletes at major championships.

The case is the latest in a string of incidents that have frustrated the Nigerian athletics community in recent months.

Rosemary Chukwuma was at the centre of controversy at the CAA Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, after she was relegated from gold to silver in the women’s 100m final, while Nigeria’s relay team also suffered disappointment after initially finishing second before Canada’s disqualification was overturned and the Canadian team reinstated.

For many stakeholders, Ezechukwu’s exit has become another reminder of the need for stronger technical representation and better preparedness whenever Nigerian athletes compete at major international championships.
