Patrick Vieira has been appointed the new head coach of Senegal’s Teranga Lions.

The former France international replaces Pape Thiaw, who left his position following Senegal’s early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Vieira’s appointment was unanimously approved by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) on Monday.

According to the FSF, the appointment of the former Arsenal midfielder is part of efforts to strengthen the technical management of the national team and help Senegal achieve its sporting ambitions.

Discussions are ongoing between the relevant parties over the administrative and contractual details surrounding Vieira’s assumption of the role.

The FSF stated that the date for the official presentation of the new head coach, as well as details regarding the next stages of his appointment, will be announced in due course.

Vieira was a key member of the France squad that won the 1998 FIFA World Cup on home soil.

Since moving into management, the 50-year-old has coached several clubs in England and France, including Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Nice.

His appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Senegalese senior national team.
