Essugo: It’s An Honour To Captain Chelsea

Chelsea midfielder Dario Essugo has expressed great surprise and pride after captaining the Blues for the first time during a 3-3 pre-season draw against Johor Darul Ta’zim in Malaysia on Sunday.

The 21-year-old midfielder stated that wearing the armband meant everything and showed that manager Xabi Alonso values maturity over age.

In a chat with the club’s website, he expressed gratitude toward his manager, noting that working under the former star midfielder has been a fantastic experience.

He believes the decision reflects his growth and sends a positive signal to other young players that performance and maturity count most.

“I didn’t expect to be captain at this age for this big club, so for me it’s just a pleasure, and I enjoyed it a lot. For me it means everything, because I didn’t expect it,” he told club media.

“I feel like it’s a message for me and for all the players that it’s not about the age but maybe about your maturity, so it’s about learning and staying positive.

“I’m enjoying working with the manager. We mentioned it a lot in this pre-season, but he was a very good player.”

Essugo is viewed as a high-potential enforcer providing strong depth and defensive cover alongside the club’s other central midfielders.
